Student did not show

February 21, 2011

I meet with my student and talked with him and did the news about Me survey to get to know him. It was difficult to get him to start talking to me so i started by saying things about myself. Once we were done going through as much of the survey as possible with his interest. I tried to get him to read a book that was titled Oh Cats! He struggled with this and had a hard time even recognizing the words. Once i noticed this i stopped and we did a word spree to see how many word he knew how to right. He wrote three so i decided to do letter and sound recognition. He was able to successfully do the letter and sound recognition. from this i went and got a really easy book that had pictures to go along with the word and John was able to figure out the word by looking at the pictures which is a method that i was very happy to see him use. There were a few time where i put my foot down and became stern because he started to goof of. I read the book The Big Bad Scary Wolf and then had him do a recall about what i had just read and found that he needs some work on the comprehension side of things.

My student was a few minutes late but today i worked with my student and worked with Natalie ;) She helped and did some basic assessments with John and gave me a better idea of activities to do with him. It showed me when i needed to work with him and that flash cards are an awesome way of doing this. I was able to get the list of pre-primer words that he should know and work with him on the ones he doesn't. This session was very helpful for me because i was lost and was not sure quite what to do with a kindergartner who could not even read words. But i was able to see how to go about introducing them and if he say's he does not know that it is ok. After she left we finished the pictures and re-read the book and i asked him questions for recall. I went and got other books to read with him for the remainder of the time we had together.

SPRING BREAK

March 14, 2011
Today John and I worked more with the pre-primer word and worked with the sound name of the letter and words that could contain each letter of the alphabet. From when Natalie went through the alphabet with him and when we did it again he was able to come up with a lot of the same word as before but i pushed him to try and think really hard and see if he could come up with another one. After John was able to come up with two i helped him in coming up with at least two to three more with hints such as a type of animal a place you go to excreta. We went through the pre-primer words at the beginning of the session and at the end for repetition and the second time he was able to identify more of the words which show growth.

Today John and i started with going over the Pre-primer words to begin with to continue the repetition and he did about the same as the first time on march 14 but i was happy because he recognize a few more than before with out the help from me. I did help with the ones that were not as easy for him and then went back to the alphabet and writing letters. I would ask him if he knew what an A looked like and then we would work together to write the alphabet both the lower case and Upper case letters. We also went back to talking about what words could be associated with each letter and i wanteed to see if from the previous week he could come up with more on his own. We talked alot about what makes a letter uppercase verses lower case. We read a few books towards the end one of which i read and then asked him about what happened in the book. The second book we read together where i read the sentience first and had him repet.

John did not show

April 4, 2011
Today i was so excited to see change in John and his understanding although it was small i could still see it. Through out the tutoring sessions up to this point i heard a lot of "I do not know" for a lot of things i had asked him to do. To eliminate this i changed how i was asking him the questions and i was more direct and gave him an example with each thing i asked for. Today we worked on the AT and the different words that you can get by adding a letter in front of AT. we first went through and created word and then i would re-enforce the word by writing a sentence with the word in it and then we mad flash card and i would read the sentence back to him without him seeing it and have him pick from the 7 flash cards which word in the sentence was one of our concentrating word. After to further re-enforce i had him come up with sentience's for each of the words and then he circled the word of concentration. We read a few books one of which he was reading for school that he brought with him and two others. I was very happy when the words like THE IS AND AT (at the beginning he wouldn't recognize) he read with no problem at all which shows progress. YAHHH :)

April 11, 2011
Today my student and i went back and reviewed the -at word by going over the sentences and going back through the flash cards. He did very well with this and got them on the first try. We then read a book that had the -at words in it and he did very well with this. We moved on to the -an and i introduced the different words that can be made by adding a consonant to the beginning of the -an. I wrote out sentences that had the words in them and then i read them then had John read them. we made a set of flashcards that also went along with them. I also went over and reviewed the pre-primer words just for review.

Today me and john went over the -at ending and the -an ending words by going through the flashcards and having him create the words with the foam letters. we went over all the sentences that i wrote and that we created and he did very well with this i then had him use the dry-erase board and gave him one of our word and then had him spell it. HE GOT THEM ALL i was so proud of him. we did a few more activities with the word and then i went back to the alphabet and had him give the name of the letter the sound and a word that had the word in it. We did this earlier in the tutoring session so i wanted to see if there was any improvement. he was able to list a lot more word that correlate with the letter than before. We went back over the pre-primer dolce word flash cards and i kept track of the one he got right and i compared them to the list that Natalie had and he was able to identify and read out-loud more than half which was a vast improvement from before. We read a book then i had him draw a picture that illustrated what happened in the story. I have seen improvement and if i was able to continue to tutor him i know i would see even more but in the time i had i am very happy with the progress he has made.
